Glashütte Original - Living in the '70s

Most of the Tarts are old enough remember the 1970s, some as adults, most of us as children, but the fashion and design of that decade may well be ones that some of us prefer to forget.

Baselworld 2011 has brought a new offering from Glashütte Original, who are moving from the ‘Sixites’ to the ‘Seventies Panorama Date’, with its instantly recognisable stylistic nod to the eponymous decade, and featuring GO’s distinctive panorama date feature. The squarish shape, the bracelet, they both remind me of some of the watches my father had during that period.

With a polished stainless steel case and bracelet, the ‘Seventies’ dial is made from silver, and presented in three variants - galvanized silver, galvanized ruthenium, or blue. The ruthenium dial has a sunburst surface, the silver version is matte, and the blue dial features finely graded shading, starting with a light centre and spreading to a darker edge.

The silver version has rose gold hands, the others, white gold hands and indexes, the latter’s hour markers tipped with superluminova.

The Seventies Panorama Date’s bracelet has a patented adjustment mechanism of GO’s which uses the integrated double G logo as both the button of the clasp means by which the bracelet can be adjusted.a total of 8mm in eight staggered steps.

Through the domed sapphire crystal caseback you can see its Calibre 39-47 automatic movement.

This is a good looking sporty yet dressy watch. Like GO’s Senator Sixities, it manages to be retro yet modern, and at 40mm x 40mm, it’s not too big for most wrists.

  2. @initial.jh : Maybe the retro thing is partly to capture a nostalgia market amongst buyers?
